With more than 2.4 million people in the country have tested positive for COVID-19, many pressure groups and militant organisations think that the celebrations will rather be subdued. As ceremonies with social distance and limited attendance are the norm, Independence Day 2020 will be no exception.

Eight banned militant groups of North East India region include United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Khaplang (NSCN-K) have called for boycotting the Independence Day celebrations by announcing a total shutdown for 18 hours in the region on August 15.

Apart from ULFA-I and NSCN-K, six others banned rebel groups of the region include Hynniewtrep National Council (HNLC) based in Meghalaya, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) from Manipur, Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) from Manipur, Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO) based in Assam and parts of West Bengal, People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK) based in Assam and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) based in Tripura have also called for boycott the Independence Day celebrations in the region.
