Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is to probe Prasanta Kumar Dutta the for DIG of Assam Police and Diban Deka a former BJP leader behind the Assam police (AP) recruitment scam.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (CJMC) remanded Prasanta Kumar Dutta to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody for six days on Wednessday. PK Dutta is the prime accused of the SI exam scam of Assam Police department and also the former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Assam Police. Diban Deka the another main accused behind the exam paper leak scam who was also a former BJP leader surrendered before the Police and is being interrogated at the Assam Police SB Branch in Guwahati.
A court in Assam also sent Diban Deka, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader who has now been expelled, to five-day police custody in connection with the Assam police recruitment scam. Deka along with retired Deputy Inspector General of Police PK Dutta has been named as the main accused in the exam paper leak scam. The police had also announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information about their whereabouts.
After huge public outcry, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal ordered a swift investigation as a result of which PK Dutta has been finally arrested in Nepal. PK Dutta was arrested in Nepal by a team of West Bengal police. He was arrested from Kakarbhitta area in India-Nepal border. After he was nabbed at the Indo-Nepal border he was being handed over to the West Bengal Police (Shiliguri). He was arrested by the Special Branch of Darjeeling district. Dutta was arrested while he was on his way to Assam with his son-in-law and son. Soon after Dutta is being brought to Guwahati, Assam. As he was tested negative for COVID at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH, Guwahati) Dutta was produced before the Court.
The former IPS officer has been absconding since September 20, the day when the Assam government cancelled a written exam to recruit 597 sub-inspectors to the police force. The Assam Police recruitment examination was cancelled after the exam question paper was leaked and circulated on social media.
The additional director general of Assam Police (law & order) GP Singh further interacted with the media on Saturday and informed that the accused former IPS officer and his son Ishan are suspected to have fled to Nepal by road after the scam was exposed, as Dutta’s daughter is married to a Nepali citizen, who is a resident of Kathmandu. Prime accused of the SI exam scam of Assam Police PK Dutta who was arrested from the Assam-Nepal border at Kakarvitta on Tuesday morning has now entered Assam is currently in Chirang district’s Kajalgaon. GP Singh was also present in Chirang. A team of the Assam Police brought PK Dutta to Guwahati from West Bengal at around 3:30 on Wednesday morning.
Police seized the Range Rover (TN19 Q6464) in which Dutta had travelled to Siliguri from Guwahati. The CID seized the vehicle from Japorigog in Guwahati. The seizure took place after Dutta was brought to the city. Lakhimpur Police handed over Atul Nath to the CID. Atul is a constable of the 19 APBn (Assam Police Battalion). He was detained by the police after his mobile number was found in the call list of PK Dutta. The Assam Police investigation team also raided Dutta’s residence at Rupkonwar Path in Hengrabari also raided his many hotels and properties in Guwahati and Dibrugarh.
Assam Police has been also conducting various search operations at various places owned by former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Prasanta Kumar Dutta who has been accused in the question paper leakage scam in Assam Police Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment since the issue broke. The raids were carried out in connection with the leakage of question paper of written test for sub-inspectors in Assam Police ahead of the commencement of the examination. It grilled a BJP leader, Diban Deka, for his alleged involvement in the leak.
The team of police raided PK Dutta’s under-construction Bhargav Residency at Jiban Phukan Nagar at Dibrugarh and also raided two of his hotels in Guwahati. to unearth the more details related to the case. Dutta reportedly visited Bhargav Residency a few days ago. However, the CID could not detain the former Assam Police officer as he escaped along with his family members before the arrival of the investigating team. The written test, scheduled to be held on September 20, had to be cancelled as the question paper was circulated on social media hours before the examination. Police also interrogated two relatives of the former cop. However, police have not revealed details about the investigation.
The scam came to light after the question paper got leaked as the exam was underway across Assam on 20th September. The exams were halted immediately that led to a lot of discontentment among the candidates. A total of 597 posts for the unarmed branch of Assam Police were to be filled through this exam. The Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP government in Assam came under a lot of public pressure to nab the culprits and the CM ordered immediate action.
Under the strict order of Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, the CID and the anti-corruption and vigilance cell has been sweeping the properties of former cop PK Dutta. The investigation is led by Assam Police ADGP Law and Order GP Singh and names of youth leaders from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have come to the fore among many.
According to reports, the former DIG owns 110 bighas of land at various places of Dibrugarh. Dutta who is the main accused in the question paper leakage scam is on the run. Of the many properties, PK Dutta is said to be the owner of five hotels in Guwahati itself. The police team has so far recovered many incriminating documents, bank details and 8 kilos of gold worth Rs. 3.5 crore from Dutta’s residence at Hengrabari, Guwahati.
The fingers all over from Barak and Bramhaputra valley are pointed towards PK Dutta who is said to be the mastermind of this Assam Police Sub-Inspector recruitment scam. Dutta was also one of the key players who played a major role during the anti-ULFA operations in the 90s too.
